The second largest of the lakes, it has the most extensive coastline. Generally the settlement is sparse, and dependent on the resources of the land and lake. Georgian Bay is a large offshoot of the main lake, considered by some a lake in its own right. Its shores are strewn with other 30,000 Islands. The settlements are smaller and isolated. The southern reaches of the lake feature sand beaches. Further north the coastline gives way to the rolling rocks of the shield, made famous in many Group of Seven paintings.
