Thunder Bay is the gateway city to the remote regions that roll north towards Hudsons Bay. A collection of shipwrecks dot the north shore. Beyond the shore the land quickly gives way to complete wilderness. Soon the rivers switch direction, no longer emptying into Lake Superior, they rush north to empty into Hudsons and James Bay.
As with all locations on the Canadian shield, the area is riddled with lakes. The most significant of them is Lake Nipigon. Explored by Europeans in the Seventeenth Century, the lake saw some trading post activity but has never developed a large population. Its solitude and size make it a popular recreational waterbody.
